Sharing scale model reviews and builds, painting and weathering techniques, modelling tips, diorama building, and more. I like to build scale models on almost any topic, regardless of scale. Models I've covered include everything from 1/72 scale modern aircraft to a 1/32 Lancaster, WW2 armour, strange prototype Soviet tanks, Formula 1 cars, ships, and Star Wars models.
I'm always willing to learn new modelling techniques, try scratch building, and improve my skills - while remembering that scale modelling should be fun! Feel free to contact me - suggestions and subject ideas are always welcome.
Occasionally companies will contact me about producing reviews of products. My guidelines for such reviews can be read here: docs.google.com/document/d/1-RqjPC32DBWXf9pdJdDqkTkWUrJa7h3FHwhgqOdS3pc

Tutorial: How to build a rubble / ruins terrain base for your WW1 or WW2 diorama (1/35 scale model)
How to build a rubble / ruins road terrain base for a WW1 or WW2 diorama using XPS foam, sculptamold / Papier-mâché, plaster of paris, and acrylic paints. In this tutorial we build a simple road with piles of ruins / brick rubble at the side of it. This is ideal for military vehicles or figures based in World War 1 or World War 2, in a variety of settings. The rubble could represent the Home Front with vehicles travelling the bombed-out streets of London, or the Allies final advance in to the destruction of 1945 Berlin. The terrain can be used with a specific model or as a background/backdrop for photographing your finished models.

D-Day 80th Anniversary build - Short Stirling (Italeri 1/72 scale model)
Переглядів 9 тис.14 днів тому
Today is the 80th anniversary of D-Day - Operation Overlord - the Allied invasion of Normandy, France. To commemorate this I build this 1/72 model of the Short Stirling. Used earlier in the war as a four-engined bomber, the Stirling was removed from front line service in 1943 but still saw extension use until the end of the war. During D-Day Stirling aircraft were used to transport British para...

Here in Canada we have the same product and we call it Celluclay. And I find it great to work with. But it should be sealed after it dries.
Well done. Excellent presentation. Thank you.
Well done 👍
Thank you
Most excellent. Love using sculptamold. Brilliant product. Such an effective outcome. You can only make complex diorama bases so often as an average modeller.
Another great video, the mini diorama sets off all of your models to good effect, just goes to show how a little work enhances model kits.
Thanks. Yes, I really like generic bases like this
Really evokes the atmosphere of the reference photograph that inspired the piece. Best wishes.
Thank you George
A simple and very effective base, MN. Such an easy and adaptable way of displaying military models across the decades. Great idea and thanks for sharing.
Cheers mate. I do like these bases with the ability to swap models in and out.
Looks good to me mate, a lovely little diorama. 10/10 mate👍🇦🇺👍
Thanks!
Excellent mate. Love your tutorials, I’ve learnt a lot thanks 👍👍
Thank you mate - I'm glad it was helpful
Awesome! Great tutorial mate 👍🇦🇺👍thanks for sharing 👍
Thank you mate - glad you enjoyed it
A realistic and beautiful base, adds a lot to the diorama!
Thank you Phil
Great little video. This will be very helpful to me for creating a base I want to do.
Thank you - I'm glad it was useful
Very versatile base! Simple and realistic. Sometimes less is really more with dioramas!
Thank you! Definitely - keep it simple :)
Amazing job! I love the use of sculptamold to build up the pile, and the paint work is very realistic!
Thank you very much :)
Very effective!
Thanks Jeff
Very convincing, great tips!
Thank you mate
Just finishing my diorama (Warsaw uprising 1944) I bought some amazing rubble stuff from DioDump, much better than my poor efforts at rubble piles. But watching you I think I might have a go at this myself.
The DioDump stuff is good, but quite expensive for what you get. I'd recommend brick molds from Diorama Debris. It doesn't matter what you put in them (plaster, sculptamold) or how good the mix is - in fact, a poor quality, dry plaster mix gives a more damaged, worn look to the bricks. One of the best small tools I bought.
Ok, thank you for that, I will have a look after attempting your way 👍
Great video and tips as always. Just curious where you source your period photos which you often use. Thanks so much.
Thank you. I use a variety of sources - Wikipedia often has some; WikiMedia Commons usually has more, and WorldWarPhotos often has many too, well categorised.
Great thanks.
Like that all the material used are readily available in the local hardware stores.
Thank you - yes, keeping it straightforward for this one!
Nicely done - we do need more rubble in our dioramas... (look at period photos)
Thank you. I agree - those places were very, very messy.
Looks great, quite simple to build to. 👍
Thank you. Yes - straightforward with minimal materials and paints
Very well done.
Thank you kindly!
Just finished a tiny ruin for a diorama. Tiny corner, added some board floor, now its all covered with rubble *SIGH* never underestimate the work you gotta put into random chaos!
You're absolute right! And "random" is really hard to do :)
Excellent how-to! I’m gonna try this too 💥👍💥
Thank you - I'm glad it's useful
멋진 영상 감사합니다 thank you so mush
Thank you!
Looks fantastic 👍 thanks for the tips
Many thanks!
HI Stu nice wee video very helpful, cheers Liam
Thanks Liam - glad you liked it mate
The base looks great! I was wondering where to set my T-60 artillery tractor (The miniart kit), and a city scene was considered, just all the videos I found had a lot of different products that I don't have, but you included literally everything I have at home. Now I can make this great diorama! Thanks for it,and can't wait to see the final result for the halftrack!
🤝👍
Thanks mate. Yes, I try to keep it simple for things like this. I was really happy with the colour tones I could achieve with just the three base colours.
@@ModelNerd That is what I feel like, sometimes less tones is better, for example on figures I literally just prefer a base,a folds/shadow colour, and a highlight, and I just prefer it more simple, and I guess same applies here!
I love this finish on the model more than the one on your Arma Hurricane. But I’d be pleased with either of the finishes on mine. Wonder what happened with Airfix on the canopy fit - nice save by you. Something I’ll need to look out for when I build the kit. Looks like the canopy parts are a tad underscale, since the turret fit seems correct. 🤔
Thank you. I've no idea what happened with the canopy :)
Hey Stu camo really turned out great, I've not seen a 1/48 kit using wing spars to connect. the wings, As I recall the Hurricanes had more shoot downs and more aircraft made than the Spitfires but the world fell in love with the Spits. Someday I hope to master those radio wires. I'll switch over and catch that full build Cheers Bob
Cheers Bob! The Hurricane is definitely underrated. I'd love to do a (new tooled) one like the 1/24 Spitfire, if Airfix released one :)
hi,just seen this been away on holiday,i live in Belfast in a street called stirling avenue and local streets have names associated with shorts eg rochester avenue and sunderland road as belfast had the massive shorts factory at Belfast Docks which made a lot of shorts sunderlands ,the large slipway still exists where they were put into Belfast Lough, would like to see you make a shorts sunderland model, keep up the good work.
I love little reminders of history like that. It helps keep the memory alive, I think. I do have Italeri's Sunderland in the stash :)
So cool
Thank you
An all black scheme is really tough to master and fills me with trepidation because I like nightfighters and as modelling subjects. Yours looks pretty good and I learned a lot from watching you. Hopefully my first RAF nightfighter model will be as good. 😊🤞🏻 I have this one and the Airfix Defiant in my stash too.
Thank you. I agree - it's hard to achieve. Did you see my video on the Airfix Defiant night fighter?
@@ModelNerd no i havent. Will look for it. I thought you hadn’t started it yet. 😄
Just a comment for the algorithm
Thanks Robert
Just a thought for the ration boxes..how about dipping or spraying with panel liner? It's paper so something translucent should work. The whole diorama looks fantastic some decade I'll be able to paint figures like you. 😊
Thank you - that's a good suggestion. As for the figures - I'm still a long way from where I'd like to be, but the very thin glaze technique has served me well I think.
Those were some great models and dioramas, thanks for compiling all the stills for us! That reminds me: how many unfinished projects do you currently have on the bench? 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it. I've got the Prince of Wales, the M3 half track, the York, and the Ardennes diorama with the Panther / Stug.
@@ModelNerd That is some good stuff - do you have deadlines planned? Or at least some ongoing progress? No pressure, just asking 🙂
You got to get closer for the static grass as the bottom of the applicator has a small current of electric in it which will static the grass upwards
Thanks. Yes, I've definitely improved my technique since this video!
How did you paint the inside of the helicopter?? 6:28
Is this fuselage painted with lacquer paint..?? 10:59
It's painted using Tamiya acrylic paints and an airbrush
@@ModelNerdThat landing gear and internal instrument panel must be very fine and small. How did you paint them?? 7:44
Where do you sell those figures?? 14:55
What is the main purpose of that Lee Gang-yong thread? 14:56
But is it appropriate to color using lacquer paint and acrylic paint alternately? 15:09
I just use acrylic paints
I bought them from Hannants in the UK
@@ModelNerdYes, what!.. They painted it by spraying acrylic paint with an airbrush!..?? 13:09
Well, that was a depressing video to watch, lol! Only joking. What great models. Thanks for posting. Lots of inspiration & ideas logged away for possible future use.
Definitely! The ideas list always gets longer!
What an amazing display of dioramas and vignettes. It's incredible how a military model placed in a small setting has so much impact. Did you exhibit?
No, I didn't exhibit. But I did get a lot of ideas and inspiration :) You're right - some of the most notable dioramas make very good use of small space (such as the French tank in the forest near the end of the video). A very realistic, confined feeling being in the woods.
If you're right about it having markings for Operation Jubilee, the Dieppe raid, then I must get one. From 1969 to '79 I served with The Royal Regiment of Canada, which participated in that raid, and suffered horrific casualties. I knew many veterans, still serving as reservists, who survived that shingle beach. I would love to honour them in some small way.
You can double check on Scalemates - they should have the instructions available to view, but I believe that is correct. That would be a great project.
@@ModelNerd Scalemates says that the markings could have been for Operation Jubilee or Operation Starkey. I can find no information that Whirlwinds were used during Jubilee.
Hi. I,m glad to se some of the models there. I couldn,t get there this year. But hopefully I will make it next year. It will be nice to see some of the 'guys'. Good vid.
Thank you!
Great models, for me ,something to aspire to and the music, Gustav Holst, Jupiter, one of my favourite pieces of music, thankyou.
Many thanks!
Some nice builds there 👍. Plus loving the music 👍
Glad you like it! Thanks for watching
Model shows do drive me crazy. The kits always seem perfect, but of course they would. Seems like the dioramas take more time than the kits would. Thanks for sharing, Cheers Bob.
And some of the smallest seem like some of the most detailed - those 1/76 dioramas are often incredible.
